The story about the diver who was bitten by a nurse shark makes clear that sharks are not all that innocent. Surely this was not a Jaws-like incident, but an example of what could happen if people interact with these great sea mammals who do not know what they are doing.

It is probably a good thing that St. Maarten has quietly outlawed shark dives. This time the victim was a diver, but next time it could have been a tourist and then all hell would have broken loose.

In the meantime, the incident does not reflect in a negative way on the Save our Sharks project that is currently underway. Protecting our sharks is a worthwhile venture but protecting ourselves should not be completely forgotten either.
